Combinado? Sim? Lets's bora!
PM cardgame is a game of cards (i know, i know…), but why? Why not an app, or board game, or just instructions for gameplay that can be run with pen and paper?
Today's post is about the decision to make a game about Product Management that is based on cards. Come see why.
Creating a game is mainly about setting goals and rules. It is not always necessary to have a board, cards, fake money, dice or markers. Not all games need something physical. Case in point: the 21-questions-to-guess-an-object games we use to pass the time on long car trips.
Games that don't need any materials to be played are easier to produce, of course. But they are also a bit too loose in two major ways:
They don't stop changing.
Since there is no game material that tangibilizes the mechanics and dynamics, a purely theoretical game will evolve organically away from its initial configuration. People will forget the rules, change rules, even forget the theme. In the end, a game will give rise to several others but all with indeterminate authorship. Authorship, for my purpose with this product, is necessary. They don't take you places.
Games that have some type of material, board, player piece, dice, etc. are games that have a greater immersion. Playing a strategy game like Risk, but using an abstract map instead of one similar to the world map we know will be less immersive. When the immersion in the game is lost, the game becomes about nothing. It just becomes a set of goals and rules.
Cards as medium, what's good about it
Extremely versatile: it is possible to create many types of games with cards. Different types of cards can be created with different effects, a logic of secrecy can be included (participants don't see each other's hands). It is even possible to use cards to create a kind of board game (the game Carcassone is a bit like this).
Simple to produce: Cards are simple to produce. Of course, cards made industrially and professionally will be more difficult and expensive to get. But it is possible to launch something simple, which can be easily calibrated with the feedback of the tests.
Small: Games with more than one participant require a minimum of coordination (”who brings the game?”) and we don't need to make this operational side of coordinating a play session any harder. A deck of cards can be thrown in the coat pocket or left forgotten in a backpack, ready be used whenever.
Adaptable: It is simple to adjust a deck: just add, remove or replace cards. If an edition for some reason is not as fun as expected, it is possible to make changes to the base deck to completely alter the vibe.
Summing it up
As McLuhan said, the medium is the message and a stripped-down card game instantly communicates that it isn't to be taken too seriously. If we mix this with cool illustrations and funny copy, we're golden.
